The Studio.

From the workshops of the Renaissance masters in Florence and Venice, where princes and courtiers would call on a man in a paint-stained apron, to the ateliers of Bohemian Paris, artist’s studios have long held a fascination. This is Michael Sangster’s studio in North West London. Here you can see where the work is actually done.
In a 19th century former Baptist chapel, in a workshop high up beneath a curved and ogee-panelled ceiling, Michael Sangster plies his trade, surrounded by the tools and props necessary to his craft. All is well-ordered and carefully maintained.

The light, all important, is good here, and unbeknownst to passers-by on the pavement below, paintings gradually come to fruition in this loft . For Michael Sangster painting is a metier full of the unforeseen . He is frequently surprised by what is revealed in the work. Montaigne’s observation that the best things to be found in painting, are there, “not only in spite of the intention, but without even the knowledge of the workman”, is written on the studio wall.
